São Miguel, also known as "the Green Island", is the biggest and more populated from the Archipelago.
It has an area of 757 Km2 (65 Km of lenght and 14 Km of width).
It is formedby two massive volcanic picks, divided by a low altitude central chain of mountains, having it's
higher point, the called "Pico da Vara" with 1.080 m of altitude.
The island is well known by its volcanics phenomenous and mysterious lagons. The most popular are SETE CIDADES
with 12 Km perimeter formed by two lagons: the blue and the green. The LAGOA DO FOGO is situated in the heart
of the island and surrounded by an original vegetation, classified as a natural reserve. The LAGOA DAS FURNAS
has various volcanic phenomenous (thermal springs, geysers, fumaroles, etc.).
S. Miguel is the political and administration center and has the headquarters of the Regional Goverment.
