Terceira, as the name indicates, it was the third island to be discovered, having inicially the name of
"Jesus Christ Island". It has an area of 382 Km2 (29 Km of length and 29 of width), having its higher point in
Serra de Santa Barbara with 1022 m of altitude.
Being a crucial stoping point to the Portuguese Routes, it was in this island that Vasco da Gama burried his
brother, Paulo da Gama when was returning from India.
Announced by UNESCO, in 1983 as a World Historycal Heritage and beeing the center of the Diocese, the city of
Angra do Heroísmo is the oldest in the Azores.
The island is also known for his traditionals festivities: S. Joaninhas; Festas do Espírito Santo; Bullfights
(where the Bulls are set free in the streets, being hold only by a rope).
