The S. Jorge was created by many, straight line, volcanical eruptions. It has an area of 246 km2
(56 km of length and 8 km of width) and his higher point is the Pico da Esperança with 1053 meters, where
is possible to see the other islands of the central group.
The year of the discovery is not known, but 1439 is the first reference, but only 20 years later the
settlement started.
One of the particularitities of this island is the Fajãs, these is not more than small plains at sea level.
In the north coast it brings out the Fajã do Ouvidor and the Cubres and in the south coast the Fajã dos
Vimes and of S. João. In the east coast of the island there is the Ilheu do Topo considered a "Natural
Reserve" where migratory birds rest.
