Pico, also known as "The Mountain Island" due to its magificent volcano with 2.351 meters (the highest
point in Portugal) and an area of 447 Km2 (42 Km of length and 15 Km of width).
In this island many people risked their lives in their whale boats to catch whales. There is an old factory
which was converted in a museum, the "Museum of the Whalers" where the life of these men is portraid, with its
tools, means of transportation of that time as well as objects made in whale teeth/bone.
The Pico island is also known by the quality of the wine, "Verdelho do Pico" which it was once exported to
Russia. The vines are grown in lava soil and are protected by walls made of black rocks. Another drink produce
in Pico is the blackberry liquor.
