Graciosa. Another designation to this island is "The White Island" for the names of his localities:
White Rocks, White Mountain, White Clay, White End, etc. It has an area of 62 Km2 (13 km of length and 9 km
of width) and the higher point has 398 m, the Pico Timão.
According to some authors this island was discovered in 1450 and the first setler was Vasco Gil Sodré and
his family. It was in Graciosa island that Almeida Garrett wrote his first poems when he visited his uncle
at the age of 15.
The FURNA DO ENXOFRE is a rare volcanic phenomen because it is situated in the interior of a volcano crater.
It has a 100 m depth tunel and in its end there is a cave with a 80 m vault and an underground lake with 130
m of diameter and a depht of 15 meters.
The CARAPACHO thermal water are appreciated by its mineral richness used in therapeutics purposes.
